April 8 is International Roma Day. It was proposed as such by the International Roma Organization (Romani Union), and since 1992 it has been recognized by the UN and the Council of Europe. Today, all institutions of the European Union recognize and even celebrate April 8 as International Roma Day.
On this day, we honor the memory of half a million Roma who were massacred during the Second World War, when the Nazis applied a systematic holocaust to the Roma as well. On this day in 1971, the first World Roma Congress began in London, which adopted the anthem and flag of the Roma.
The anthem is the song “Jhelem, Jhelem”, which is also popular in Bulgaria. The organization’s flag is a red wheel with 16 spokes on a blue and green field. The fields symbolize the sky and the grass, as well as the free rugging life of the Roma in the past. The wheel with 16 spokes in ancient India was called “chakra”. It is present in the Roma flag to remind of the Indian origin of the Roma and the long journey they have traveled from India to Europe.
Since then, this day has been celebrated as a symbol of the Roma movement, of Roma from all over the world uniting in their quest for equal inclusion in the globalizing modern world.
