Here’s what she says about her journey:

“My name is Elizabeth Iliyanova Zlatkova and I am 22 years old.

I am of Roma origin. I was born in the town of Pavlikeni, but I grew up in the town of Suhindol. My family is big and close-knit. I have three sisters and one brother.

Suhindol is a small town, where I completed my primary education at SU “St. Kliment Ohridski”. From the age of seven I started going to folk dances with Nikola Lichev and Anelia Dancheva and to folk singing with Ana Borisova.

When I was in the 5th grade, I decided that I wanted to continue my education in Sofia with folk singing. From then until the 7th grade, I had the opportunity to rest only on Sundays, because in my free time I went to solfège and elementary theory, singing, dancing and study.

After hard work, I applied to NMU “Lyubomir Pipkov” and was accepted into Nelka Petkova’s folk singing class. At the school I studied Solfeggio, Elementary Theory, History of Music, Harmony, Polyphony, Piano, Choral Singing, Chamber Singing, Analysis, Folk Singing and many other disciplines. At the end of the 11th grade, I decided to enroll to dance in DUTA “Eremia” and that’s when I met the choreographer of the ensemble, Stefan Vitanov. He ignited the spark of dance in me, and I decided that through dance I would be able to create a work that would honor the memory of my grandfather Zlatko, who was the person who turned me on to singing.

Now I am a student in the 4th year majoring in Bulgarian folk choreography at AMTII “Prof. Asen Diamandiev” Plovdiv with course leader Prof. Daniela Jeneva. I created the Children’s Dance Ensemble “Yagodka” at the “Iskra” Elementary School in the village of Yagodovo, I work at the “Ivan Vazov” Elementary School, as the head of folk dances and choirs, and I am a music pedagogue at the Center for Integrated Social and Health Services at one stop in the district. Stolypinovo.

During all these years, I was guided by my love for folklore and my desire, despite the culture, customs and worldview of the Roma about the place of women in society, to have an education and a profession that I love.

Today I am grateful for what I have achieved. Every single day for me is a new lesson from which you can get the best and the worst. It has not been easy for me during these years, but I thank you, because I would not have become the person I am now, working my two professions with desire and love for folklore. I dream of helping more children to want to preserve Bulgarian folk music and dance, to become better people, to have hope for a better life, despite the limits of their culture.”

The main goal of the project is to change the attitudes of society regarding the Roma ethnic group.
